Spring Training in Southwest Florida: A Local’s Guide to Grapefruit League Baseball

Play Ball  •  Patty Orchard, Orchid Home Team  •  Cape Coral, FL

If you’ve never watched a Major League Baseball game in February while wearing shorts and sunscreen, you’re missing one of the best perks of living in Southwest Florida. Spring training is genuinely one of my favorite times of year here — the energy, the accessibility, the intimacy of smaller stadiums where you’re close enough to actually see the players’ faces. My son is a huge baseball fan, and we’ve made spring training games a family tradition he looks forward to all year.

Why Southwest Florida Is a Spring Training Hotspot

Cape Coral and Fort Myers sit right at the center of some of the best spring training baseball in the country. Two Major League teams call Fort Myers home — and both stadiums are within about 20–25 minutes of Cape Coral. Add the Tampa Bay Rays in Port Charlotte, the Atlanta Braves in North Port, the Pittsburgh Pirates in Bradenton, the Baltimore Orioles in Sarasota, the Phillies in Clearwater, the Blue Jays in Dunedin, and the Yankees in Tampa — and you’ve got eight teams within day-trip distance.

The Grapefruit League runs from late February through late March, which means the heart of spring training season lines up perfectly with some of the best weather of the year here. This is one of those lifestyle perks that genuinely surprises people when they move to SWFL. You expect the sunshine and the waterways. You don’t always expect that in late February you can grab $15–$30 tickets, sit 15 rows behind home plate, and watch big league players warm up a few feet in front of you.

Spring training tickets are a fraction of regular season prices — most games run $15–$30 — and the smaller stadiums mean every seat feels close to the action. It’s one of the best value outings in all of SWFL.

The Fort Myers Two: Our Home Stadiums

Having two MLB spring training facilities within 25 minutes of Cape Coral is something residents genuinely take for granted until they try to explain it to someone from out of town. Here’s what you need to know about both.

🧢

Boston Red Sox — JetBlue Park

11500 Fenway South Drive, Fort Myers  •  Tickets & Schedule

JetBlue Park is Fenway Park’s Florida twin — right down to a replica Green Monster in left field. It’s a beautiful stadium, and the Red Sox bring an enormous, passionate fan base down here every spring. We’ve been to games here too, and the energy on a packed afternoon during a rivalry matchup is something else. Again: aim for the third base side for the best shade.

Red Sox games tend to sell out faster than most, so check the schedule and grab tickets early. Popular matchups — especially any game against the Yankees or Twins — go quickly.

One of the things that makes spring training in Fort Myers uniquely special — and something you can only truly experience as a local — is that players stay in the area during camp. A couple of years ago we actually met a Red Sox player who was staying in an Airbnb right across the street from us. That kind of casual, genuine access just doesn’t happen during the regular season anywhere else in the country. It’s one of those only-in-SWFL moments.

More Grapefruit League Teams Within Day-Trip Distance

One of the great things about living in Cape Coral is that eight MLB teams are within a comfortable day trip. Turn spring training into a road trip and catch multiple teams in a single weekend.

Insider Tips for Attending Spring Training Games

  • 1
Sit on the third base side

At both Hammond Stadium and JetBlue Park, the third base side offers the best shade for afternoon games. In February it’s manageable, but by mid-March the Florida sun is intense. The covered breezeway at Hammond along the third base line is especially good — it catches the breeze and stays comfortable all afternoon.

  • 2
Arrive early for batting practice and autographs

Gates open before first pitch and players often sign autographs along the railings during warmups. For a baseball-loving kid, that 30 minutes before the game can be the highlight of the whole day. Don’t skip it.

  • 3
    Buy tickets in advance

Popular matchups — especially Red Sox rivalry games — sell out. Check mlb.com/twins and mlb.com/red-sox for schedules as soon as they’re posted. Most games are $15–$30 — a fraction of regular season pricing.

  • 4
    Sunscreen and hats, always

Even in the shade, Florida sun reflects off the field and bleachers. Don’t skip the sunscreen even on a cloudy day — UV is no joke here year-round.

  • 5
Arrive 30–45 minutes early on busy days

Parking at both Fort Myers stadiums is on-site and straightforward, but high-profile games fill the lots fast. Getting there early also means better parking and time for pre-game warmup watching.

  • 6
Keep an eye out around town

Players stay locally during spring training camp — in hotels, vacation rentals, and Airbnbs throughout Cape Coral and Fort Myers. Don’t be surprised if you spot a familiar face at your local coffee shop, restaurant, or literally across the street. It happens more than you’d think.

More Than Just Baseball

Spring Training as a Way of Life

One of the questions I get most often from people considering a move to Cape Coral is: “What’s the lifestyle really like?” Spring training is actually a perfect example of the answer. From late February through late March, this area comes alive. Fans pour in from Boston, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, and beyond — all here for baseball and sunshine. The restaurants buzz, the energy is high, and as a local you get to enjoy all of it and then go home to your own neighborhood after the game.

And when spring training ends, the minor league season picks right up. The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels play at Hammond Stadium all summer — affordable, fun, family-friendly games that are honestly one of our favorite warm-weather activities. It’s the kind of thing that makes you realize Cape Coral and SWFL offer so much more than people expect before they get here.
